52 Hike Challenge: Upping the Hiking Ante

52 Hike Challenge: Upping the Hiking Ante

One of our goals for 2017 is to step up our hiking frequency. We discovered the awesomeness of getting our nature on last year, so we want to double down on how often we hit the trail. We stumbled upon #52HikeChallenge on Instagram and felt instantly inspired to join this community of hikers, who run the gambit from beginners to experts.

52 Hike Challenge

The 52 Hike Challenge is to complete 52 hikes per year, or around one per week. The definition of what constitutes a “hike” is totally up to you – whether that’s climbing a fourteener, exploring local nature preserves, or strolling a paved trail in your neighborhood. You can start with one-mile hikes in the beginning and work up to longer or more challenging hikes throughout the year. For us, we’re going to count anything that gets our heart pumping and our lungs full of fresh air. We’re lucky enough to have several urban trails and national parks just outside our doorstep, so we will certainly never run out of options. After we build up our endurance, we hope to conquer some of the toughest hikes in our area by the end of the year.

But this challenge is more than just getting outside more often. The 52 Hike Challenge ups the ante for folks that want a true challenge. The Adventure Series has objectives to complete throughout the year, with the goal of pushing participants to challenge themselves, discover new beautiful places, and connect with like-minded people who believe in sustainability and conservation.

Here’s a sampling of some of the Adventure Series challenges:

  • Find 5 waterfalls
  • Hike to 2 bodies of waters (lakes, rivers, or ocean)
  • Join a Stewardship hike – pick up trash or participate in a restoration project
  • Introduce 1 new person to hiking

There’s also a new challenge in 2017 for 52 Hike Challenge veterans: the Explorer Series. Try a different trail every week, whether in the same park or thousands of miles away. Maybe you will stumble upon hidden gems that only the locals know 😉

Our Excuse to Learn and Grow

Regardless of which challenge you choose, we hope you will join our commitment to explore, learn, and connect in 2017. Hiking has become our favorite hobby, but we had no idea it would make such an impact on every aspect of our life. We feel our best when we are exploring nature. This challenge will encourage us to push our boundaries and grow in ways we probably won’t expect. We can’t wait to see where the next trail will take us.

  1. I have had a very similar experience by “discovering” hiking and it having an impact on all aspects of my life. I completed the 2016 Adventure Series and am on to the Explorer Series this year. Turns out I only repeated one trail in all of 2016 anyway. I love that you mentioned urban hiking. It can be a great option if you’re short on time or it’s difficult to get to a traditional hiking trail. Plus, I find urban hikes can be incredibly interesting and educational. Usually when I’m walking around in a city I’m walking with a purpose, not noticing what’s around. But when I’m urban hiking I’m looking at all of the surroundings, looking at the people, looking for historical and cultural significance, etc.
